About the Gender Community
The Gender Community promotes Millennium Development Goal (MDG 3) - Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, focusing on increasing development effectiveness to improve gender and girl child situation, promote rights-based approach to development, and ensure gender mainstreaming.
Solution Exchange helps members of this Community increase the effectiveness of their individual efforts to promote gender equality and equity; and address challenges to women’s involvement in development i.e. their increased access, capacity, and equality in social, economic and political endeavors, by tapping into collective knowledge and collaborative actions.
The mission and role of the Gender Community facilitated by UN agencies – UN Women and UNICEF is to facilitate cross-learning, sharing and collaboration among development practitioners spread across India and abroad, on various gender related themes and issues. Currently, the focus areas of Gender Community include eight broad themes.
Since its inception in June 2005, over 3500 development practitioners have joined the Gender Community. They represent diverse backgrounds: non-governmental organizations, government and the public sector, private sector, researchers and academia, activists, consultants and other professionals interested in gender equality and women’s empowerment.
