Conflict Resolution for Water Management

The Water Community brought together key practitioners to explore conflict resolution for water management, especially in scarcity situations.

Prema Gera, UNDP, New Delhi posted a query on conflicts over water management between local communities and external actors, especially in situations of water scarcity. At the end of the discussion a Consolidated Reply was issued, which included suggestions on management of water conflicts in different contexts - rural-urban, inter-sectoral, and triggered by policies - between communities and external actors.

It helped to identify key practitioners in conflict prevention, and ensure their participation as well as providing direction towards solving such conflicts, from the grassroots to the policy level. The discussion also provided an input for a conference on water conflicts held in Jodhpur. The national and international perspectives proved to be a useful resource, with case studies, experiences and mechanisms to manage water conflicts in India and abroad.
