Community Highlights

Greetings from the Resource Team!

In 2008, based on NDMA’s recommendation, the Disaster Management Community of Solution Exchange posted a query on identifying possible Water Purification Technologies for the flood affected regions.  The query drew responses from a wide range of people on commercial and other technology for water purification that can be used at the household level in disasters. The query received more than 65 responses, covering around 35 technologies, 25 experiences and 100 recommended resources.

The consolidated reply of the query was shared with many disaster management practitioners working in flood affected regions. Many have already used the information and contacts emanating from this discussion. In order to take this initiative forward the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Disaster Management Community of Solution Exchange, United Nations jointly organised this meeting of industry and humanitarian organizations together to deliberate on the need during emergencies and best solutions available. This preliminary and focused interaction of stakeholders aimed at identifying and taking forward specific areas of action for industry in the field of water needs in disasters. A report on the event and further action will be shared with you soon.

we would like to share with you an ‘innovative practice in DRR”. This is about the Rural Ambulance developed by a West Bengal based NGO called PRISM.

The rural ambulance, which is an improvised version of the common rickshaw van, well designed to serve the purpose of an ambulance in a much more effective way. After its introduction villagers have started getting an Ambulance Plus service - It has been used for 'early warning', 'rescue' and 'relief' before and during the floods in the Gaighata and Swarupnagar Blocks of North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal since 2004. Testimonial"It is a very positive trend, and has formed the base for a closer interaction and, hopefully, some very productive action emerging from it during the next big disaster we face. The Disaster Management sector is always in the need for ICT inputs during emergencies, but almost always there is no time – or knowledge resource – easily available"
