In the district of Barbal, Orissa Tata Chemicals has been working on disaster management plans with the local community. The program conducted assessment surveys, identified hazards and analyzed the data, and based on this, designed disaster preparedness and mitigation activities to address various audiences. The initiative also prepared sensitization programs for school children, community residents and women and trained the community to respond to disasters through “disaster” situation mock drills.

To help with their work, the program posted a query requesting experiences and advice on Handling Industrial and Chemical Disasters. Members from a range of organizations, including the National Disaster Management Authority and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) responded to the query.

The program has subsequently incorporated various strategies suggested by members into their work, based on inputs from the members of the Solution Exchange Disaster Management Community.
