Despite the large contribution women make to agricultural activities in terms of time and labor, women’s control over land and role in decision-making remains very limited. The issue of women’s participation in Water User Associations (WUAs) was raised through a query posted on the Gender and Water Communities. Following the issuing of the Consolidated Reply, government of Madhya Pradesh appointed a Gender Advisor and sent her for an exposure visit and orientation on gender mainstreaming to the Gender Community’s regional workshop in Hyderabad.
After attending the meeting, the Gender Advisor initiated gender sensitization trainings and introduced modules on gender mainstreaming into the training programs of the state’s irrigation department, which covered farmers and department personnel.
