Dear Friends,
Please find the Community Update for May. Thanks a lot for sharing your news, views and resources. As we mentioned earlier this year we will try to demonstrate the power of collaboration, let us work towards that. In the last two years we have discussed several issues - there are many ideas and experiences which can be tried out at various scales. If you have any idea of fostering collaborative work, do let us know. There are some nice ideas in the Annual Forum report which you might wish to explore.
We have spent a month and a half discussing safe motherhood issues, its time to move on and we welcome your questions / queries on other maternal and child health issues.
Looking forward your participation.
Best Wishes,
Meghendra Banerjee & Deeksha Sharma Resource Team, MCH Community, Solution Exchange
For making the remotest corners of the country's mothers and others aware about safe motherhood, the Federation of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Societies of India is producing a 13-episode documentary-drama for radio and television that will go on air this July. This news came in National Daily- The Hindu14th May 2007 (http://www.hindu.com/2007/05/14/stories/2007051410440100.htm)
We need to make sure, more women and others would watch and hear this programme.
Regional News-papers can aware people about the up-coming programme on air and television. Solution-Exchange's community member from all over the country can inform about this programme to regional news-paper and in village panchayat.
Rujuta Deshmukh, Independent Consultant, New Delhi
One interesting news about safe motherhood I noticed in "Indian Express" which I want share with you all. safe motherhood Adalat was held in Dhenkanal of Orissa, organised by state Mahila Commission in association with UNICEF and coordinated by India Social Welfare Organization (ISWO) and of course the district administration.
It aimed at addressing problems faced by would be mothers under Janani Surakhya Yojana and NRHM. Main grievance put forth by the mothers was money demanded by doctors even from patients who are critically ill. Next was non availability of incentives under Janani Surakhya Yojana since December 2006.
Such adalat if held everywhere will increase awareness among women and encourage them to raise their voice. Is not it?

I am a rural development professional having the experience of 11 years in the health sector. Please let me know if there are any upcoming trainings, seminars or conferences on reproductive health, HIV/AIDS in India. Awaiting your response.

I sometime get stuck for appropriate words in Hindi corresponding to technical medical terms used in reproductive and child health, HIV/AIDS, general health etc. I would appreciate it very much if you could guide me to some good online English-Hindi dictionary or some standard regular dictionary of technical medical terms.
Iron deficiency remains a major nutritional problem among infants and young children in India. The recent National Family Health Survey III, state that more than 74 percent children between the ages of 6-35 months were anemic. Earlier studies from different regions in the country during the last three decades have also reported a similar high prevalence.
Since 1990, outstanding progress has been made toward in our country eliminating iodine deficiency through universal salt idolization. Vitamin A deficiency is being addressed through nationwide biannual distribution of vitamin A solution to infants, young children, and fortification of foods.
During this same period, little progress was made towards the elimination of iron deficiency. Iodine and vitamin A deficiencies have received far greater attention. The Iron continued to remain as most “neglected micronutrient” in spite of it's higher magnitude of problem and more serious health consequences.
There is strong scientific evidence from community-based studies that iron deficiency anemia is associated with impaired performance on a range of mental and physical functions in children like mental development, physical coordination and capacity, cognitive abilities, social and emotional development, and loss of intelligence quotient similar to iodine deficiency. The other health consequences are i) poor scholastic performance ii) reduced immunity iii) increased morbidity iv) increased susceptibility to heavy metal (including lead) poisoning. The precise effects vary with the age groups studied. Recent studies have documented that the iron supplementation at a later age may not reverse the effects of moderate to severe iron deficiency anemia that occurred during the first 18 months of life .
Now, MOH&FW have decided to give a high priority to the problem of Nutritional anemia. The attached circular from MOH&FW includes all groups 6- 60 months , 6- 10 years and 11 to 18 years for Iron and Folic acid distribution . This is indeed a great initiative by Government of India. (Kindly see the attachment )
We, all the scientists working for promotion of Maternal and Child Health should take the initiative and provide all the support to the GOI and state Governments to make this initiative successful.
Please do share your comments if any, on the new guidelines , so that the comments can be consolidated and shared with MOH&FW.
