Dear Friends,
Greetings!
We are pleased to bring to you the August update of the MCH Community, which is a snapshot of our network activities for the current month. We are currently building our Community Home Page where you will have more interactive and collaborative features, and the information contained in the community updates. We invite your suggestions on the content of the Community Page.
What do you want to see in the upcoming MCH Community Home Page?
After the month of discussion on Breastfeeding, we will now start looking at the broader thematic area of MCH community – the Millennium Development Goals (4 & 5). This year, as you know, is the Mid Point of the MDGs, and it would be great to re look at our roadmap and also take stock of situations. Please tell us what we should discuss and what we need to take stock of. We will send you a further reminder for this series of discussions. Hope this will not only generate awareness but also put our work into perspective.
Please send in your responses. We look forward to it.
Best Wishes,
Meghendra Banerjee & Deeksha Sharma Resource Team, Solution Exchange

Dear all,
You will be pleased to hear what Hon'ble Prime Minister said on 15th August, here is the key para that tackles child malnutrition and recognizes breastfeeding to be key component of the future strategy. Complete text of the speech is also attached for your complete reading. A very good one.
"....The problem of malnutrition is a matter of national shame. We have tried to address it by making the mid-day meal universal and massively expanding the anganwadi system. However, success requires sustained effort at the grassroots. Infants need to be breast-fed, have access to safe drinking water and health care. We need the active involvement of the community and panchayats to see that what we spend reaches our children. I appeal to the nation to resolve and work hard to eradicate malnutrition within five years..."
Hope this will change the direction of tackling with malnutrition by preventing it.

I have been reading all your important and relevant queries with interest. I feel that we need to look beyond the obvious and think more deeply on issues that lie at the root of maternal and child care in the Indian subcontinent.
Currently, I have been appointed by the One UN --Delivering as One Strategy for Maternal Mortality and Neonatal Deaths. For the past thirty years the global approach has been # to instruct # the rank and file health workers by medical rules and protocol -- instead of a policy to learn and to incorporate what is happening on the ground --- be it at the community or family level has led to a history of failures and also, waste of vast amounts of money.
We need to think beyond this box-- and all initiatives including breast feeding will be successful. Breast feeding needs a lot of energy and also is there sufficient milk for the mother?
We need to acknowledge why there is pernicious anaemia and often with that work load that make women so weak
Anyone who has lived in the villages in India for a [period of time will realise how rich and extensive is local knowledge and how much healing and herbal medicines combine to inform such knowledge, The problems lie in extremely poor sanitation, lack of water - women have to walk miles everyday for water-- and poor housing.--example--rats infest households -- as indeed, land use -- there is very little land and the soils have lost their productive capacity.. low yields.. as indeed, cooking by the wood fires and smog that it creates and dangers inherent in wearing nylon sarees that are cheaper than cotton sarees by women who cook.
In urban setting these problems occur -- but prostitution - be it male or female --and other forms of income that accompany the “jhuggi existence" are much more difficult given the pollution levels All this affect the health and well being of individuals and in this case harm especially for women and children- Men are always fed first each morning.
Thus we need to ask ourselves how we can improve the dietary intake, how we can improve housing, sanitation--maybe introduce solar energy/gobar gas-- and, water pipes for each home or at least a few metres away.
AND, Culture is never to be seen a barrier but as an integral aspect of human existence -- and needs to be worked with and respected.

It’s really great to see that this month we are celebrating breastfeeding month.....
