Dear Friends,
Greetings! Its time for our September update. This update carries a snapshot of activities that took place in MCH community throughout September. As usual you will also find a list of readings, upcoming events, partnering opportunities shared by our members.
This month we discussed a very important issue of involving men in Family Planning. A timely discussion as it is, the members have shown interest to take this issue forward and look deeper into various aspects of social, cultural and behavioural aspects of involvement of men.
This year, as we mentioned earlier also, is the mid point of the Millennium Development Goals. The Millennium Declaration set 2015 as the target date for achieving most of the goals associated with it. We would like to share a report, issued midway through the 15-year period for global accomplishment of the MDGs. Meanwhile we would also like to share the report a meeting of the inter agency Inter-agency and Expert Group on MDG Indicators that has recommended inclusion of Reproductive Rights as a part of the Goal 5. The target is described as Achieve, by 2015; universal access to reproductive health, with additional indicators of Adolescent birth rate, Antenatal care coverage (at least one visit and at least four visits) and Unmet need for family planning.
Looking forward to your views, news and feedback.
Best Wishes,
Meghendra Banerjee & Deeksha Sharma Resource Team, Solution Exchange

I would like to inform you that I had Received the Best doctor in the state for 2000 from the Government of Kerala.
The paper "-Where there is no anaesthetist-C section under Local anaesthesia an effective alternative" received the best paper award in the journal-Rural Surgery, A journal Of Rural Medicare Society in 2004.
My dream and ambition is making available one Comprehensive Obstetric Care Service available 24*7,accessible, and affordable for every 500000 population in India, geographically distributed. I always wish to emphasis the fact that no mother should die from Pregnancy as pregnancy is not a disease and it is purely a physiological process. If we are loosing more and more women in the age group of 15-25, it is actually a system failure.
We should try to make pregnancy Joyful event and not one to be afraid of. I still wish to hear that more and more FRUs are getting operational giving 24*7 service.. I was told that at the Central level some one has started thinking in this line.
I would like to join hands with those having similar thoughts and feelings.

I applaud the Solution Exchange Maternal & Child Health Community. I have seen and even participated on e-discussion on various parts of this program. I have witnessed that how members were involved in giving solution to the topic once announced. There was tremendous involvement in giving not only suggestions but their own field experiences. This is an excellent Programme, what I feel personally. The discussions, thoughts, field experiences definitely will be useful to the improvement of the health of the society, particularly, illiterate women.
I had collected data of 779 women in June 2007 to August 2005 in two slums , one on Hill and the other on plain area, regarding ANC, PNC, Child Care, Waterborne diseases, Reproductive health problems and awareness of HIV/ AIDS, and STD and found that, illiteracy is the main cause for not availing health facilities available in the area. Accordingly I have presented so far 2 papers, one in PAA 2007 Annual Meeting, in March, 2007 in New York, on “Maternal Care among Reproductive Women in Slums in Greater Mumbai” and another in the Kangwon National University, Chuncheon in August, 2007 on “Child care among Reproductive Women in Slums in Greater Mumbai”.
I am also interested in taking the projects in the same field with larger sample size of about 3000 and in India there is lot of scope to such study. But I have no knowledge of financing agencies. If you can guide me in this regard, I will be thankful to you and thus such opportunities will give chances to serve poor sector of people in the society, I feel.

This is a reporting of an initiative taken by our foundation in one of the rural schools of Kancheepuram district, Tamilnadu. A brief perspective is required to report the background of the initiative. Girls are sometimes unprepared for the onset of menstrual periods during school hours. when it happens, the girl immediately wants to go home and we often find girls not attending school throughout their cycles. Also, we find that menstruation is a taboo topic and education on this aspect is minimal for the adolescent girl….. Read More
