The Water Community addresses water and environmental sanitation challenges in rural and urban areas in India - including access, quality, management and service delivery.

What is the Solution Exchange for the Water Community?

The Water Community is a network of professionals from a wide range of organizations and perspectives who are working to promote sustainable and equitable access to water and sanitation in India.

Solution Exchange connects members of this Community and increases the effectiveness of their individual efforts, helping them share and apply each other’s knowledge and experience. Through Solution Exchange, colleagues can turn to their peers across India for solutions to the day-to-day challenges they face.

What are some of the issues covered by this Community?

  1. Drinking water supply- availability of clean, affordable and reliable sources of drinking water
  2. Sanitation- provision and use of sanitation facilities
  3. Water governance - government policies and programmes on water and sanitation supply
  4. Water Resource Management - who and how manages water, water service delivery and efficient management
  5. Access to water  – equitable, accountable, sustainable and cost-effective distribution and use of water for rural and urban populations

The Community is guided by a “Resource Group” representing key organizations and agencies in the water sector in India:

Success Story: Toilets with rainwater harvesting systems

This is based on a query by Bhawna Vajpai seeking technical inputs for rooftop rainwater harvesting in schools to provide water for sanitation. The Loomba Trust, with which she worked then, sought these inputs for a programme to build and maintain sanitation facilities in 1,000 schools across India.
